Piece of the Week

I made this book yesterday and though it didn't turn out quite like I was hoping, I'm still excited about how it turned out. I loved the illustration on this flier and I've been waiting for a chance to use it.

Piece of the Week

Another new one from the Genesis series, I'm excited about how it turned out and glad that I found a way to make this idea work. When I first started the genesis series I had a piece akin to this but it just wasn't working and I couldn't figure out how to make it work. Problem solved.

Piece of the Week...

So for the piece of the week, this is more of a pre piece of the week. I don't know what a lot of other artist's sketch books look like, but this is what one of my sketchbooks looks like.
There's a lot of writing in my sketchbook, also there's generally a lot going on, I'll just use the space where I find it.  The writing at the top of the picture is from months and months ago The colored picture is from yesterday...
I started doing this about a year ago where I do a little thumbnail of a piece to keep track of a series (this is the Genesis series), that way I can easily know how many pieces I have, if they've been finished, started, etc. if there's a title I write that down and maybe a note or two about what was behind the piece.
I sometimes use colored pencil to either better capture the idea or experiment with possible colors.
Also like I said above, I go all over in my sketchbook and there's not really an up or down, I start from the front, the back, and use any page direction that's convenient.
Somehow I would guess that many people's sketchbooks look like, and not all of my sketchbooks look quite like this but there are a lot of similarities.

Piece of the Week

I've been trying to keep the piece of the week more recent pieces but today's piece of the week is from a few years ago, but I only recently was able to take a decent picture of it.

This piece is called Joachim and Boaz, the names of two columns/pillars that I believe were in/at Solomon's temple. I believe that pillars/columns as the above, can be symbolic for a transition, moving from one thing/place/etc. to another.
Update, so after I wrote this post, I went to Wulf's exhibit at the Springville Muesum of Art I noticed this painting of a similar title.
This is what the little card by it had to say about Joachim and Boaz.

Piece of the Week

And for a change, a piece of the week that's not a part of the Hex series. This is the third piece so far in the Light series. I was driving home and the sun was hot pink in a grey sky from wild fire smoke in the air. It looked soo cool.  I don't have the right colors to get a hot pink but it happened again the other day and it was also a deep red color like I have here.

Piece of the Week

A lot of Hex pieces in the works lately. This was a crucial key in the unlocking of a pattern.

Piece of the Week

I am really excited about this piece of the week. This piece was inspired by a beautiful Tuscan scene in a movie, I loved the way the light made everything golden.

Piece of the Week

Here's a two-fer, two pieces that weren't really part of any series. I had a hard time finding something I wanted to share for this piece of the week, I guess that means that I need to be getting more painting done and I look forward to doing so.

Piece of the Week

A few months ago I was at a house with a great view and more than that got to see something I'd never seen before, across the way there was a pink column of light coming down from the clouds in the sunset. With fading memory and limited pallet, I've done my best to capture that beautiful sight.

In researching for this series I was intrigued by the many different ways that bees have been portrayed in art in the past.

Piece of the Week

This piece of the week is from the Hex series, I saw a picture of this design on a youtube slideshow about the Prince's School of Traditional Arts. The design was done on colored paper and was just a line drawing but I've loved it and been playing around with it.

Piece of the Week

This is a piece from Genesis, I used the spiral for the first time, I'd see diagrams on how to make the spiral but it took some additional figuring to figure how to actually draw it. The picture of the whale that I modeled this after was so beautiful.

Piece of the Week

This piece is a bit different, have I mentioned that I also do book binding? I do, I found out about it in college, it was a class that filled up overnight and it kept being filled up before I could take it. I eventually got in and was able to take it twice and I loved it. I love books and being able to make my own is something I love.

This book is a Coptic binding, it's my favorite binding and it's about the oldest book binding there is I believe.

Piece of the Week

Another piece from Hex. I love how versatile this basic design/pattern is, I think at least half of the pieces I've done so far for this series have been based on it.

Piece of the Week

This piece is from the Genesis series, the square and circles are the orthagon square, which includes all twelve of the orthagons, it was much more challenging to paint than I had anticipated.

Piece of the Week

This week's piece is a fairly simple geometric piece but I really love how the colors and the pattern came together, a repeated theme(?) in my work is the use of symbolic colors and shape, squares and red go together and represent the earth, blue and circles go together and represent heaven, etc.
